Bird Survey 2018

Ongoing monthly surveys show that the birdlife on Green Dragon farmland is ever increasing.

Bird of the Month – September 2018

WHEATEAR

The Wheatear is from the same family of birds as the thrush. It lives mainly on the ground in open, rocky country, moor and farmland where it hops and runs along.

When it is in flight, the Wheatear has a characteristic tail pattern  a black ‘T’ on a white rump. The males have blue-grey backs and heads, black wings, black cheeks with white eyes-stripes and pale orange chests.

The Wheatear is normally a summer visitor to the north and west of the UK, but it can be seen anywhere on migration and was spotted for the first time on Green Dragon land this September. It winters in central Africa.
