We keep Poll Dorsets here at Green Dragon because they can breed all year round, enabling us to spread out the lambing throughout the year. They are related to the rare breed Portland, that can also lamb out of season and has origins in the county of Dorset.
They produce hardy lambs as twins or triplets, that grow faster than those of the rare breeds which makes them a more commercial breed for meat production. Their strong and dense fleece is a very pure white.
The Poll Dorset is a breed of sheep developed for meat in the USA in the 1950s and is now a major contributor in the commercial lamb industry. The breed thrives under intensive management and is suitable for small farms. The ewes are good mothers and used widely in crossbreeding programmes.
